Fiberglass Doors: Fact vs. Fiction

The Door Centre • Jul 27, 2015

When it comes to fiberglass doors , there’s always misconceptions and misinformation regarding their performance and maintenance.

In this blog, we bust the myths regarding fiberglass doors and separate fact from fiction.

fiberglass doors are susceptible to warping

Any door – fiberglass or not – which does not have a good internal frame could possibly warp.

This is true from some fiberglass doors imported from Asia. Because they are built quickly and cheaply, they may not have the structure needed to prevent warping.

Solidly build fiberglass doors (like Therma-Tru) are made with a powerful LDL inner frame that will not allow the door to warp.

fiberglass doors are more expensive than steel doors

The Door Centre has partned with OSTACO Windoors to provide smooth-skinned fiberglass door systems.

In combination with Therma-Tru door panels, the resulting door can complete directly with steel insulated door systems in terms of price and durability.

This means that, in some instances, fiberglass doors are less expensive than their steel counterparts.

Fiberglass doors can’t handle Canadian weather

Therma-Tru fiberglass doors were first developed over 30 years ago. That’s given them plenty of time to test their mettle against cold Canadian winters and hot Ontario summers.

Over time, they’ve proven to be more reliable than steel doors. This is because fiberglass doors:

  • Won’t dent
  • Aren’t prone to rust
  • Warmer to the touch

Fiberglass doors need multi-point locks

Regular height doors from The Door Centre require regular lock and handle sets. No customization required.

The only reason anyone would use multi-point locks is to offset the warping issue that can be found in certain fiberglass doors.

However, for doors which are eight feet tall, you should use ask your contractor to use multi-point hardware to counteract wind deflection that can be found at the top of the door.

The amount of sunlight a house plant receives will play a major role in how well it does over time. If the plant is given too much light, the sun’s rays will burn the leaves. If it is given too little, the leaves will turn yellow, and the plant will eventually die. In fact, one mistake made frequently by amateur indoor gardeners is thinking that their plant with yellow leaves needs more water when what it really needs is more sunlight.

Old-fashioned doors may be beautiful, but the single-pane windows they use allow lots of air in and out of your home, meaning you can lose energy and money. Today’s doors use energy-efficient glass and state-of-the-art installation techniques to make sure your inserts keep energy loss at bay. In addition to traditional glazing points, inserts are securely installed using special adhesives designed to hold the glass in place without letting moisture in. Adhesives are also developed to withstand direct sunlight and freeze-and-thaw cycles to ensure a tight, secure fit in all seasons.
